5 simple things that could be saving you money today
There are several things you can do that can save you a lot of money, however, most of them require a more long term change to your life - which is not what this article is about. This article is going to help you save money in five ways that you can start literally the moment you are done reading this.
The first way: drive less
With gas prices continually rising, being able to reduce the amount of gas you buy by even one gallon per week can end up saving you hundreds of dollars per year. If you can manage to use one less gallon per day, then you can save hundreds of dollars each and every month! The easiest way to start conserving your gas is by writing down how much you use and how far you drive every day, then figure out what you can do to drive less each and every day.
The second way: eat less junk
Everyone has his or her own comfort foods. However, we all tend to ignore how much these comfort foods tend to cost. My own personal comfort food used to be energy drinks. I used to have one every morning when I woke up. It was something that I looked forward to when I woke up and helped me get ready for my day in a great mood, having had my favorite drink at the beginning of the day. However, I went to the doctor one day and was told that if I didn't stop drinking energy drinks, I was going to quickly develop liver problems. Because of this, I quit immediately. I didn't notice it immediately, but I started noticing after a few weeks that I had a nice lump sum of money that I previously didn't have. My favorite drink was costing me $3+ every day!
The third way: using less power in your home
While this is the most common advice given to those who are looking to save money, it can truly save you a lot of money with little to no effort being put in. All it takes is not turning on a light as much as you normally would, or turning off an appliance that you normally leave on for hours at a time without even thinking about it.
The fourth way: learn to say no
A lot of us have friends who like to invite us out to do things all the time. If you aren't planning to go out and eat, grab a few drinks, or do anything that costs money and you go on an unplanned night of fun, you'll find that you might end up spending quite a bit of money that you don't exactly have in your budget. On one such occasion, I went out with a few friends and after several hours of our fun, I had spent over $100! Needless to say, this really tore a hole through my budget, and I had to really watch my spending habits over the next few weeks.
The final lesson about saving money: start small
Saving money doesn't start big, it starts small. It's like turning a grain of sand into a rock - each grain by itself isn't going to make a bit impact; however, a rock, which is composed of hundreds of thousands of grains of sand can make a very large impact. Start small, and don't beat yourself up if you end up only saving a small amount of money.
